The quick answer
Japan luggage forwarding lets you send a suitcase between many staffed hotels and supported service counters instead of carrying it on the train. For a Tokyo-Hakone-Osaka route, send the large bag past a one-night Hakone stop and carry an overnight bag. The same hotel-to-hotel process can work from Osaka back to Tokyo when both properties confirm the handoff.
Major hotels can often help send bags to another staffed hotel, and official tourism guidance also points travelers to certified Hands-Free Travel counters and supported convenience-store drop-off locations.
But do not treat it like an invisible teleport. Confirm that the sending location accepts the bag, the receiving property will hold it under your reservation, and the quoted delivery date works with your check-in.
Our rule
Never forward medication, passports, cash, electronics you cannot replace, or anything you need before the confirmed arrival. Those stay in the overnight bag.
Can you forward luggage from Osaka to Tokyo?
Yes, the decision process is the same in reverse: ask the Osaka hotel whether it can send the bag, confirm the Tokyo hotel will receive it under your reservation name, and use the delivery date quoted at the sending desk. Do this before checkout rather than assuming every property or route offers the same timing.
If Hakone is the destination instead of the overnight stop, confirm the exact delivery point with the ryokan or hotel. “Hakone” or “Hakone-Yumoto” is not enough by itself because staffed reception, local coverage, cutoff times, and the final address determine whether the handoff works.
The Tokyo–Hakone–Osaka strategy
A one-night Hakone stop creates a bad luggage tradeoff: carry a large suitcase through hills, local transit, and a ryokan for one night, or send it ahead and travel with only what the night requires.
For our honeymoon route, forwarding the larger luggage and packing a smaller transfer bag made the multi-city stretch feel calmer. We would use the same decision pattern again:
- Two days before the transfer: ask the Tokyo hotel whether it can send luggage and how much lead time the route needs.
- Before sending: confirm that the Osaka or Kyoto hotel accepts deliveries and that the reservation name matches the shipping form.
- For Hakone: carry one backpack or small rolling bag with the next day's essentials.
- At the next city: collect the large bag from the receiving hotel's front desk.
Forward past Hakone when
The stop is only one night
You have a staffed hotel at both ends, a confirmed delivery window, and enough essentials to handle a delay.
Keep the bag with you when
The handoff is uncertain
The next lodging cannot confirm acceptance, the timing is too tight, or the bag contains something you cannot be without.
How hotel-to-hotel forwarding works
Luggage delivery is commonly described as takkyubin, takuhaibin, TA-Q-BIN, or Hands-Free Travel. In the easiest version, the sending hotel's front desk helps complete the waybill, accepts payment, and transfers the bag to the delivery operator.
Bring the receiving hotel's name, complete address, phone number, reservation name, and check-in date. Ask the desk to show you the expected delivery date before the bag leaves your possession, and keep the receipt or tracking details.
Ask these questions at the sending desk
- Can you send this bag to my next hotel?
- When is the latest drop-off time for my required delivery date?
- What size, weight, and item restrictions apply?
- How can I track the bag?
- What should I do if weather or traffic delays delivery?
What belongs in the Hakone overnight bag
- Passport, wallet, cash, and travel documents
- Medication and basic toiletries
- Phone, chargers, portable battery, and camera
- One change of clothes and comfortable walking layers
- Weather protection appropriate for the forecast
- Anything needed for the ryokan, onsen, or next morning
- One extra day of essentials as a delivery-delay buffer
Confirm both ends before you pay
Large hotels with staffed reception are usually the cleanest use case. Private lodging is different. Yamato specifically warns that pickup and delivery may not be available when an Airbnb-style property has no reception staff.
Do not rely on a platform listing that merely says “luggage storage.” Message the property and ask whether it accepts forwarded luggage before check-in, what name must appear on the waybill, and how long it will hold the bag.
Treat timing and cost as a quote, not a constant
Delivery time and price depend on the operator, distance, bag dimensions, weight, cutoff time, and exact sending and receiving locations. Weather and traffic can also cause delays. That is why this guide does not give one permanent Tokyo-to-Osaka price or promise next-day delivery.
Get the current quote from the actual desk or booking service. If the bag must meet a flight, cruise, or nonrefundable reservation, leave a larger buffer and follow the operator's airport-specific instructions.
When a locker or hotel storage is better
Forwarding solves a city-to-city handoff. A locker or staffed storage counter is better when you need the bag again the same day. Hotel storage may be simplest when you are sightseeing before check-in or after checkout without changing cities.

Japan luggage forwarding FAQ
Can you forward luggage from a Tokyo hotel to an Osaka hotel?
Many major hotels can arrange hotel-to-hotel luggage delivery. Confirm that both properties can send or receive bags, ask the sending desk for the current delivery estimate, and provide the next hotel name, address, phone number, reservation name, and check-in date.
Can you forward luggage from Osaka to Tokyo?
Many staffed hotels can arrange the reverse Osaka-to-Tokyo handoff too. Confirm that the Osaka property can send the bag, the Tokyo property will receive it, and the quoted delivery date fits your check-in before paying.
Should you send luggage past Hakone?
For a one-night Hakone or ryokan stop, sending large bags from Tokyo to the hotel after Hakone can make the transfer much easier. Carry an overnight bag with medication, documents, chargers, valuables, and enough clothing in case delivery takes longer than expected.
How long does luggage forwarding take in Japan?
Delivery timing varies by origin, destination, operator, cutoff time, weather, and traffic. Some services offer same-day or designated-date delivery, but travelers should confirm the current estimate at the sending counter and leave a buffer instead of assuming next-day arrival.
Can luggage be forwarded to an Airbnb in Japan?
Do not assume it can. Yamato warns that pickup and delivery may be unavailable when a private lodging has no staffed reception. Confirm directly with the property and operator; a staffed hotel, service counter, sales office, or another supported arrangement may be needed.
